Review and Glimpse of What's Ahead

By meditating and realizing the topics covered so far, we ensure ourselves that life after life, we will obtain a precious human rebirth (not a lower rebirth) and we will have all the conditions to continue a spiritual practice leading to the ultimate goals.

We meditate on this precious human life to realize how we have a special opportunity to practice now.  When we appreciate the great potential of this life, will do not waste it by meaningless activities.   When we meditate on impermanence and death, we overcome procrastination and become less attached to worldly things and concerns.  By meditating on the danger of lower rebirth, taking refuge and avoiding harmful actions while engaging in helpful, virtuous actions, we protect ourself from taking lower rebirth.  This is called the "lower scope" of the path.

Once we have realizations of the above topics, we are ready for the "intermediate" scope where we meditate on the sufferings of human life so that we develop a spontaneous wish to attain permanent liberation from even a human life.  This wish gives us the strong motivation and encouragement to complete the practice of this comprehensive spiritual path.

When we get to the "great" scope, we will meditate on love, compassion, service, ways to overcome our self-cherishing and develop a true and equal for all.  This will provide us the heart with which we will go on to meditate on ultimate reality so that we can go beyond all illusions and enjoy bliss for ourselves and others.
